FAQ's

How Long Are the Piano Lessons?

Usually half an hour, however, if you would like an hour lesson we can arrange that.  Pupils who are working towards the higher grades normally have an hour due to the increased volume of work - but it's not essential.

What is the Best Age to Start Piano?

All children are different in their rates of development and the right age for one student may be different to another.  It is important that students have good literacy and numeracy skills and be able to concentrate on an activity for longer than ten minutes.

Are You DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) Checked?

Yes I am fully DBS (formally know as CRB) checked.

Is it Too Late to Start Learning Piano?

No, it is never too late to begin.  Adults often find piano playing relaxing and therapeutic.  Adults sometimes have an advantage over children with better co-ordination skills.  If you have ever thought about playing piano then my advice is just go for it!

I Don't Own a Piano. Can I Still Have Lessons?

Yes, but you would need an instrument to practise on regularly.  A child could start learning on a keyboard but once the child has shown interest you should think about investing in an acoustic piano.  There are some very good digital pianos to purchase but you must ensure that the instrument has fully weighted keys.

What Sort of Music Do You Teach?

Once the basic foundations are in place, we can play anything you want.  I teach the grades with the Associate Board of Royal School of Music (ABRSM) grades 1-8 and the first diploma (dipABRSM) but if this is not the direction you wish to take then we can find music that appeals to you.

Do I Have to Take Examinations?

No, not at all.  I find the examination route a very effective way to learn the piano as the examinations require scales, arpeggios, sight reading and aural skills.  But I understand that this is not the direction every pupil wishes to take.  I tailor make my lessons to suit each pupil.

What Happens if I Cannot Make the Arranged Lesson?

If for any reason after booking a lesson, circumstances dictate you are unable to attend at the specified time, I am always happy to reschedule the lesson to a more suitable time if given a minumum of 24 hours notice at no additional cost, however, in all other circumstances, the lesson will be forfeited and full payment due.

How Do I Book My First Lesson With You?

If you wish to book lessons, simply contact me using any of the ways listed on my contact page.

Do You Teach During Half Term and Summer Holidays?

I normally teach during the school term time, but on occasion, if there is an examination imminent, then lessons can be arranged.

Do You Teach Music Theory?

Yes I do.  People often find music theory difficult but there is no need.  My approach to theory is fun and engaging.  I have many ways to teach theory with easy to remember rhymes and lots of patience!
